Sensory Garden

Artscape was invited to create an imaginative and safe garden for elderly people with dementia. Safety being paramount, items such as poisonous plants, steps, removal of cones from the pine tree, dark surfaces, cobbles and loose gravels were carefully considered.

The garden needed to be interesting to the patients and appealing to their senses. Movement was created with the use of water, grasses, plants and trees.

Special features, such as a decorative net to catch cones, were included to ensure patients safety. Screening with trees and tall planting created privacy from neighbouring houses. Lighting ensured that the garden could be enjoyed at night.

Bright colours were used and plants such as thyme and camomile were included in the 'touch and feel' areas.
